How it works

1. Find your meaning

Search in English (“strength”, “love”, “peace”) or paste Chinese characters you already have. Every result shows its pinyin and English, so you know exactly what you would be wearing.

2. Preview the characters

See your selection in Kaiti, Songti, Heiti, Brush, Running or Lishu, switch horizontal / vertical layout, and try ink colors — the way it might sit on skin.

3. Check, listen, download

Listen to the pronunciation, read the meaning one more time, then download a high-resolution PNG to show your tattoo artist or print as a stencil.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it is completely free — no account, no email, no payment. Everything runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and the image you download stays on your device.

How do I find the right character for my tattoo?

Two ways: type an English meaning into the search box (for example “strength”, “love” or “peace”), or browse the curated sets by length. Every result shows the Chinese, its pinyin and its English meaning — so you can confirm what you are about to ink.

How many characters should a tattoo have?

One character is the most common choice: compact, elegant and easy to place on a wrist, shoulder or ankle. Two characters work well when you combine two ideas; four-character idioms suit larger areas like the back or a full arm. Use the length buttons to filter results to 1, 2, 3–4 or 5 characters — the five-character set is drawn from classic Tang and Song poetry lines.

Can I check what characters I already have mean?

Yes — type or paste them into the search box. If it is a character, word or idiom in our dictionary, you will see its pronunciation and meaning, with a link to the full entry. (This is a common reason people use the tool: finding out a design meant something quite different from what they expected.)

Do I need to install a Chinese font?

No. The calligraphy (Kaiti) style is a web font that loads the first time you select it. If it is unavailable, the preview falls back to a system font and everything still works.

Can I put my own picture behind the characters for reference?

Yes — the Add reference image button lets you place your own picture (a sketch, a design you like, a photo of your arm) behind the characters while you tune size, angle and spacing. Everything stays on your device: the image is never uploaded or stored, and it is not included in the downloaded PNG — the export always contains your character art only.

Can I show the image to my tattoo artist?

That is exactly what the download button is for: it exports a high-resolution PNG (up to about 1900 × 1900 px for a single character) that you can print or send to your artist. One small note: this tool gives a clean reference rendering — your artist may add their own style on top.

Where do the meanings come from?

From our Chinese dictionary: over 14,000 characters and 120,000+ English glosses. Every result links to its full dictionary entry with stroke order, example sentences and audio, so you can double-check before committing.

How do I hear the pronunciation?

Click the speaker button next to any character or search result — you will hear standard Mandarin pronunciation. Handy when you discuss the design with a Chinese-speaking artist or friend.
