How the test works
It works like a good placement interview: it starts with easy words and moves up, so it can find where your knowledge stops. Here is the recipe:
- You see 28 words — four sampled from each HSK level, drawn from a reviewed pool of 40 words per level.
- You pick the meaning for each one — four options, one right answer, from the easiest level up to HSK 7-9.
- Lucky guesses are discounted. Raw scores are corrected for the 1-in-4 random-guess rate, so guessing cannot inflate your number.
- You get an estimate — your vocabulary size, a likely range, and the level that fits you best, plus a practice link for every word you missed.
Every sample comes from the official HSK 3.0 syllabus — the same 10,969 words behind our HSK vocabulary pages — so your result maps directly onto the exam levels. Missed words can be sent to your quiz review list with one click, and the quiz engine will bring them back on a spaced-repetition schedule.
What the test draws from
The word pool grows level by level: HSK 1 starts at 506 words, and the full syllabus reaches 10,969. Each level samples from its own list, so a high score really means you know the harder words too.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official HSK exam?
No. This is a free practice test built on the HSK 3.0 word lists — it gives you a quick estimate of your vocabulary size and a starting point. For the official exam, register through Chinese Testing International (CTI).
How accurate is the estimate?
The test samples 40 words per level and asks you 4 of them, then discounts lucky guesses. Treat the number as a guide, not an exact count. It works best when you answer honestly: wild guessing inflates your score, while skipping questions understates it. Take it again after a month of study to see the trend.
Do I need an account to take the test?
No account, no email, no payment. The test runs entirely in your browser and your result is saved locally on your device only.
